The weekend doesn't have to end. Keep Talking on your own or with a group.
Start Talking – Find conversation starters for the group or with a friend.
- How did Pastor Todd’s first message in this series “Old School” impact you this past week?
- Pastor Tom brought his ‘old school’ big Bible to church this Sunday. What is your preferred way of digging into Scripture every day? App? Audio? Print? Something else?
Keep Reading – Read the Scripture and ask a question to get the group thinking.
Read these Scriptures out loud:
Romans 5:8
- This verse is popularly interpreted in art as “I loved you at your darkest.” What do we learn about God and ourselves from this verse?
- Share any emotions or thoughts this verse stirs in you.
Hebrews 9:11-14
- Pastor Tom shared that because of Jesus’ sacrifice, we no longer need to go through a ritual to obtain atonement and salvation. The previous covenant ceremonies were a foreshadowing of the perfect redemption through Jesus' blood that was shed on the cross once and for all.
- What part of this passage stands out to you as powerful and significant and why?
Pastor Tom shared with us why the blood of Jesus is important to us today.
1. Through the blood of Jesus, we are forgiven.
The Passover lamb pointed forward to God’s ultimate salvation that would come to humanity on the cross of Calvary with Jesus Christ and the shedding of His blood.
- Read Exodus 12:13. This verse reminds us of the origin of the Passover lamb and how God saved His people. Read how Jesus explained the significance of the cup in the Passover meal at the Last Supper in terms of a new covenant in Matthew 26:27-28. Communion is a sacred acknowledgment of our covenant with God through His Son’s sacrifice and death on the cross.
- Why do we need forgiveness and salvation? How does knowing that you are forgiven change you? Has this been mostly an internal change or is it also external? Explain.
2. Through the blood of Jesus, we are cleansed.
- Re-read Hebrews 9:14 Notice the representation of the Trinity in this verse. Jesus purifies the heart. He eliminates the guilt and shame of sin and through the cleansing of His blood, we are made holy. Do you consider yourself to be holy? What does it mean to be holy and live a holy life?
- Share a time when you trusted God to hear you and love you even when you didn’t feel “holy” or worthy? What did you learn from this experience?
3. Through the blood of Jesus, we overcome.
- Read Revelation 12:11. Through the blood of Jesus we are reconciled to God and have victory in this life. How does the blood of Jesus help you overcome the enemy of our soul?
- Read Romans 12:1. What does it look like to be a “living sacrifice”? What is a barrier to you living this kind of life? What can you do to overcome this?
