In this message, Pastor Todd shared a biblically-backed formula for our finances, and practical ways we can master our money so it doesn’t master us. Use this guide to keep processing this sermon with your small group.
SERMON HIGHLIGHTS
- Financial security is less about an amount of money and more about a mindset.
- Greed is the assumption that it’s all for my consumption.
- Your money’s direction reveals your heart’s affection.
KEY SCRIPTURES
- Matthew 6:24
- Romans 12:2
- 1 Timothy 6:6-10
- Luke 12:15-21
- Psalm 24:1
- Matthew 6:19-21
- Matthew 6:33
- Proverbs 3:9
START TALKING
- In today’s sermon, Pastor Todd talked about a man who had to build bigger barns to store all his crops. If you had to get a storage unit, what would you be most likely to fill it with?
KEEP TALKING
- Jesus warned us in Luke 12:15 to be on guard against all kinds of greed, which is wanting what someone else has. What’s the last thing you purchased because you saw someone else with it?
- Billy Graham said, “There are two ways of being rich—have a lot or want very little. The latter is the easier for most.” Where do you need to practice contentment this week by being grateful for what you already have?
- It’s easy for all of us to look to money to give what only God can provide. What are you most tempted to look to money for (e.g., peace, joy, status, security, etc.)?
- Your money’s direction reveals your heart’s affection. Based on this statement and the direction of your money lately, where do you think your heart is right now?
- When we put God first in any place, He blesses that place. How have you experienced this—in your finances, in your relationships, or in your business, etc.? How does this motivate you to keep your priorities in the right order?
- What would it look like for you to apply Matthew 6:33 to your life and finances this week and begin living on the leftovers?
KEEP IT GOING
- Pastor Todd challenged us to take one step this week to begin getting our finances in the right order. What should that one step be for you?
- Consuming less
- Starting to tithe
- Going above and beyond the tithe by bringing an offering
- Becoming systematic and consistent in your giving
- As you take steps to regain control of your finances, check out the resources we have to help you manage what God has placed in your hands!
PRAYER
Father, thank You for being a generous God and showing us what it looks like to live to give. Please open our eyes to where we’ve been guided by our own greed. Help us to put You first—in our finances and in our day-to-day lives—so we can walk in Your perfect peace. Amen.
