Putting James Into Practice: Week One | Chapter One

Making your faith work all week long.

What does it look like to put your faith into practice all week long? The Book of James emphasizes the relationship between faith and works—in other words, we can’t just be hearers of the Word, we also need to be doers. As you hear the Word on Sundays and through our 21-day devotional, here are some practical ways you can put the Scriptures into practice all throughout the week.

Monday
Ask for wisdom

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” James 1:5

Take time today to pray for God’s wisdom. Here’s a prayer to follow:

God, thank you that you promise to give wisdom generously. Fill me with your wisdom this week. Help me to have your wisdom in my decisions, purchases, relationships, work, and speech. I pray for divine solutions to tough problems and creative ideas when I’ve hit a wall. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Tuesday
Thank God for every gift

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” James 1:17

When you notice something good about your day, thank God for it. It’s easy to overlook God’s gifts and rush through our day without a heart of gratitude. Thank Him for the breath in your lungs, your health, a roof over your head, the food in your fridge, your family and friends, your job, His mercy and love—and whatever else comes to mind.

Wednesday
Be quick to listen

“My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry…” James 1:19

Everyone loves being around a good listener—and no one likes being interrupted or talked over. Today, practice actively listening to those around you. Ask questions, stay curious, and give those around you your undivided attention.

Thursday
Be slow to speak

“My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry…” James 1:19

As you become a better listener, it’s also wise to learn to become slow to speak. Before you add to the conversation, ask yourself, “Is this helpful? Is it kind? Is it necessary?” When the answer to one of these questions is no, practice holding your tongue.

Friday
Be slow to become angry

“My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry…” James 1:19

As you aim to become quick to listen and slow to speak, it’s also important to keep your attitude and anger in check. Whether it’s road rage, believing the worst about someone else, or letting your temper ruin a conversation—surrender your anger to God. Notice when anger starts rising and pause to pray and confess it to God. Ask Him to help you to see things the way He sees them and for wisdom to respond appropriately.

Saturday
God’s Word in, garbage out

“Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.” James 1:21

Spend extra time in God’s Word today and ask God to help you identify any areas of sin or compromise. Ask Him for wisdom in your relationships, entertainment, and habits, and for strength to surrender anything that isn’t producing good fruit in your life.

Sunday
Serve someone else

“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” James 1:27

James chapter one ends with an exhortation to take care of the vulnerable. Who can you serve today? Is God calling you to become a foster parent, provide relief for hurricane victims, or serve at your local campus? Take time to ask God to help you identify how you can serve someone around you.
