As believers, it’s important to head into every new year seeking God’s direction and wisdom. But in order to look forward, it’s helpful to look within and look back. Here is a guide to help you ask strategic questions that will guide you as you reflect on 2024 and look toward 2025.

Helpful Tips:

  • Review Your Calendar:

Look back at your calendar, photos on your phone, social media posts, and anything else that serves as a reminder of what happened over the past year. Make a note of some of the highlights along the way.

  • Set Aside Some Quiet Time:

Give yourself some time to be quiet and undistracted. Pick a space where you best connect with God and grab a journal and Bible so you can write down any thoughts or verses as you reflect. Turn off the notifications on your phone.

  • Begin With Prayer

Approach your time of reflection as a time to invite the Holy Spirit to lead and guide you. Here’s a prayer you can follow: Holy Spirit, I invite you into my time of reflection today. Help me to have clarity, wisdom, and direction. Let me be led by your Spirit so I can become more like Jesus this year. Amen.

Reflect on the following questions that are divided into three categories: look back, look within, and look ahead. Use your journal to document your answers to each of the questions.

Look Back:

  1. What is worth celebrating?
  2. What struggles did I have?
  3. What losses did I experience?
  4. What am I most grateful for?
  5. What brought me joy?

Look Within:

  1. What did I learn about myself?
  2. In what ways did I grow?
  3. If I could give myself advice exactly one year ago, what would it be?
  4. What relationships were valuable and impactful for me?
  5. What areas still need God’s healing or strength?

Look Ahead:

  1. What is my word for the year?
  2. How do I want to grow or change this year?
  3. What steps can I take to become the kind of person I want to be?
  4. What three things do I need to leave behind?
  5. What relationships will I invest in?
