“The great challenge left to us is to cut through all the glitz and glam of the season that has grown increasingly secular and commercial, and be reminded of the beauty of the One who is Christmas.” Bill Crowder
The Christmas season should evoke feelings of peace and joy as we celebrate our Savior’s birth, but many people feel overwhelmed, stressed, and overcommitted. Additionally, our society is bombarded by consumerism and a long list of to-dos. No one should feel like they missed out on the true meaning of Christmas. So, how do we cut through the noise and keep Jesus in the center of our Christmas? Here are a few ideas.
1. Set the Tone
If you’re going to play Christmas music this season, opt for a worshipful Christmas playlist like the one the Christ Fellowship worship team created. Playing songs that emphasize Jesus in a meaningful way will help keep Him in the center of your heart and the forefront of your mind through the season. And who knows? You just might find your new favorite Christmas song!
2. Try Out a New Tradition
If your holiday traditions could use a little more meaning, try adding a new tradition. Some ideas: Light advent candles each Sunday before Christmas, sing Happy Birthday to Jesus with your family, watch a Christ-centered Christmas movie, attend a candlelight Christmas Eve service, or find a way to serve and give back to your community.
3. Read the Christmas Story
One of the best ways to keep Jesus in the center of Christmas is to read the story of His birth in Luke chapter 2. After reading it on your own or out loud with your family, take time to say a prayer of thanks for God’s greatest gift to mankind.
Christmas Prayer:
Jesus, I don’t just want presents this Christmas, I want your presence. I pray that I would not let this busy season rob me of the gift of your nearness. Help me to keep you at the center of my mind and my heart. Let your presence flow through me so that I can bring your hope to those around me this Christmas. Amen.
