Christmas traditions are handed to us as children, but as we get older, we get to decide what to include. Here are a few ideas of family traditions you might enjoy adding this year.

Attend a Candlelight Christmas Eve Service

Attending a Candlelight Christmas Eve Service at Christ Fellowship can be a beautiful way to remember the true reason for the season, slow down as a family, and give thanks. Experience meaningful worship by enjoying Christmas carols, be refreshed with a hope-filled message, and create lasting family memories.

Check Out Local Christmas Lights

Research local light displays in your area and decide which one you’d prefer to visit. There are many different options ranging from a decorated city park, neighborhood, one big house display, or holiday boat parade. Bring a thermos of warm cider or hot chocolate to drink while you drive or walk around.

Try The Giving Manger

The Giving Manger is an interactive way for the whole family to remember to serve others throughout the season. In the days leading up to Christmas, family members place a piece of straw in the manger each time they perform a kind deed or act of service.

Make Gingerbread Houses

Grab a gingerbread kit from the store or make your own using graham crackers, assorted candy, and homemade frosting.

Homemade frosting recipe:

3 cups powdered sugar

1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar

2 egg whites, beaten

In a bowl, sift together sugar and cream of tartar. Using an electric mixer, beat in 2 beaten egg whites for about 5 minutes or until mixture is thick enough to hold its shape.

Read the Christmas Story

Reading the Christmas Story on Christmas morning can be an impactful tradition for the whole family. Before the gifts, before the clean-up, before playing with the new gadgets—take a few minutes to read the story about the reason for the season.

Sing Happy Birthday to Jesus

What’s your favorite holiday dessert? Why not put a candle in it and sing Happy Birthday to Jesus on Christmas morning? It’s a fun and quick way to get the whole family involved in honoring Jesus for His birthday.

Give Back to Your Community

Go Christmas Caroling at a nursing home, deliver cookies to first responders, buy Christmas gifts for kids in need—the list of opportunities to give back is endless. Check out more ways to serve your community this Christmas!
